A California Smog Check is a mandatory vehicle emissions inspection designed to ensure cars, trucks, and other vehicles meet the states strict air quality standards by testing for harmful pollutants. It’s required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and enforced through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The program started in 1984 and tests over 7 million vehicles annually.
