FAQ
What is a STAR Certified Smog Station
A California Smog Check STAR station is a certified type of smog inspection facility overseen by the state’s Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). These stations adhere to elevated performance standards, including stricter inspection protocols and ongoing monitoring, to ensure higher-quality emissions testing and help reduce vehicle-related air pollution.
- Certification and Standards: Regular stations perform basic smog checks but aren’t held to the same rigorous, data-driven benchmarks as STAR stations, which must demonstrate consistent pass rates and accurate diagnostics.
- Services Offered: Like regular stations, STAR stations can be either “test-only” (inspections only) or “test-and-repair” (inspections plus fixes). However, STAR stations are better equipped for complex cases.
- Cost: STAR checks often cost slightly more (typically $8–$20 extra) due to the enhanced oversight, though prices vary by location.
What is a Smog Check?
A California Smog Check is a mandatory vehicle emissions inspection program designed to ensure cars, trucks, and other vehicles meet state air quality standards by testing for harmful pollutants. It’s required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and enforced through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to reduce smog and protect public health. The program has been in place since 1984 and tests over 7 million vehicles annually. It’s Required to keep up with California’s strict clean air laws (stricter than federal EPA standards) mandate smog checks to:
- Identify high-polluting vehicles.
- Prevent older or poorly maintained cars from contributing to air pollution in smog-prone areas.
- Help the state meet Clean Air Act requirements.
